Walter "Edward" Waczko was born on April 11, 1948, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, to Michael and Nettie Waczko. He grew up near the bustling town of Alonsa, on the family farm located at SW23-21-12W.
As a boy, Ed walked to school and attended Birdina, Iris, and later Alonsa School through Grade 9. In 1971, he took over the family farm, working the land and raising cattle and grain.
He met Karen Diane Symesko at a social in 1973. It was enough to be able to settle down and marry in ‘74 to the love of his life. What a journey, with many ups and downs. Together, they raised 3 boys, Curtis, Kyle, and Kenneth. In 1978, Ed built their family home that stands next to the old foundation that set his roots in the area. On September 7th, 2024, Ed and Karen celebrated 50 years of marriage.
Ed was a councilor for 33 years with the RM of Alonsa. While he never traveled much, he was able to go to Ukraine with his father and sister in 1993 for a trip to meet family for the first time.
He loved just driving down the back roads, seeing how the crops were coming up, and watching the sunrise and sunset from his deck or the kitchen table. At the farm, the door was always open, where one was always invited in for a drink and a conversation.
Ed passed peacefully with family by his bedside early morning of May 30th, 2025. He is predeceased by his parents Michael and Nettie Waczko, nephew Danny Mozdzen, great-nephew Michael Wilson, sister Mary and her husband Bill Vansickle, and brother-in-law Henry Mozdzen.
He is survived by his wife Karen Waczko; sons Curtis (Rosy), Kyle (Rebecca), Kenneth (Tiffany); sisters Elsie and Jean (Reinhard); and his grandchildren Izack, Alia, Danika, Walker, and Nash.
For those who wish to attend, a celebration of life will be held at the family farm on Friday, June 27th, at 1:00 p.m. If you could kindly bring a chair, as we will be set up on the yardsite. Feel free to stay and share some stories of Ed in the afternoon.
If so desired, in lieu of flowers, family ask that donations be made in Edward's memory to Alonsa New Horizons, Box 65, Alonsa MB, R0H 0A0 or to the Alex Robertson Museum, # 20 Railway Avenue, Box 127, Alonsa, MB R0H 0A0.
Ronald Moffit Memorial Services of Portage la Prairie, MB in care of arrangements.
