It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Rick Gretsinger on March 13th, 2025.
Rick is survived by his children Coltyn and Amaiya, his parents Connie and Tom Gretsinger, his partner Alana Charles and her children Grady and Leif, his aunt Louise Oberton, uncles and aunts Geoff and Joy Gretsinger, Gerry and Laura Gretsinger, Randy and Wendy, and close cousins in the Gretsinger and Oberton /Kaluznick families.
Rick was born in Winnipeg on May 7th, 1977 where he lived until his mom, dad and brother moved to Portage la Prairie in 1978. Rick was close to his grandparents, Baba and Gigi Oberton. He shared a love of carpentry and woodworking with his Gigi Oberton.
In later years, he was proud to have acquired some of Gigi’s tools. His brother Mike said, “Rick was as good a finishing carpenter as Gigi.”
Rick developed a fondness for working with diamond willow pieces. He created many artistic pieces and built a beautiful archway for his friends’ wedding. He was proud of his work.
Rick attended High Bluff School from Grade one to eight where he forged life long friendships with Wayne, Corey and Steve. They spent time going fishing and having sleepovers.
As young adults Rick and his brother Mike worked together in construction, which led to the startup of Gretsinger Brothers Construction. Rick’s work career included working with his brother on many notable projects which included a high-tech dairy barn in the Interlake and the building of the Velodrome in Winnipeg.
While growing up, Rick spent much time with his Baba and Gigi Oberton. At Baba and Gigi Oberton’s, he was spoiled by auntie Louise who always made monster cookies for Rick and gave him his Chipmunk collection.
In 2006, Rick moved from Calgary where he started his career as a heavy equipment operator. He worked for E.F. Moon Construction for fifteen years. Rick also had the opportunity to work on two Manitoba Hydro Dam projects: Keyask and Wasquantim.
Rick was a kind and caring person. Family was very important to Rick. The happiest time of Rick’s life was when his children were born.
The Funeral Celebration of Life Service will take place on Friday April 4th, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. at the Herman Prior Center, 40 Royal Rd N. Portage la Prairie. Following the service, the burial will take place at the Setter Cemetery, R.M. of Portage la Prairie, MB.
