Melville Arnold Perkins

Peacefully on Friday, November 24, 2017 at the Portage & District General Hospital, Melville Perkins passed away at the age of 90 years.

Mel was born and raised in the Lavenham District, son of the late Harvey and Ethel Perkins.  As a young adult he moved to Portage la Prairie and worked a various jobs including the Railroad and installing furnace duct work.  In the Mid 50’s he started working at Southport as a cook, retiring from there in 1987.

On October 5, 1962 Mel married the former Thelma Bowes and they had three children; Dennis, Arnold and Heather.

Mel was a very active 90 year old and was able to remain in his own home until the last 36 hours of his life.  This past summer he planted and harvested all his garden and he shoveled his own drive this winter.  He also enjoyed helping neighbours and friends in any way he could. 

Mel was predeceased by his parents, his wife Thelma, one son Dennis, infant daughter Heather, 2 sisters and 4 brothers..

Left to mourn his passing are his son Arnold (Cathie), 2 sisters Ann (Bob) McCreadie and Donna (George) Hancsicsak and sisters in law, Trudy and Merle.  With the passing of most of his family, he became even closer with Arnold and Cathie.

AT Mel’s request there will be no formal funeral service.  Private burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
