Mary "Joan" Lewis Obituary

On Saturday, October 30th, 2021, Mary “Joan” Lewis passed into the presence of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

She was predeceased by her husband James in 2005, her son Mark in 2015, her father Leslie Carruthers in 1998, her mother Gladys Carruthers in 2003, and her brother Howard. Joan is survived by her daughter Kori (Travis) Neufeld of Portage la Prairie, grandchildren Tempest Funk of Edmonton AB, Darbi (Dylan) Pawlowski of Red Deer AB, Brandi Roe (Dillan), Harley Roe, and great granddaughter Rayleigh Anne Joan Roe, all of Portage la Prairie MB, and granddaughter by choice Daisy Andruschuk. Joan also leaves behind her sister Edna Carruthers of Montreal QC, brothers Leslie (Bev) Carruthers of Saskatoon SK, Bill (Heather) Carruthers of Portage la Prairie MB, Edward (Darlene) Carruthers of Montreal QC, and sister in-law Sandra Carruthers of Bracebridge ON, as well as several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind special friends Joe and Mitzi Newman and family of Edmonton AB.

Joan was born in Grandview MB on March 27th, 1946. She and her family moved to Portage la Prairie in 1958 where she completed her schooling. On May 1st, 1971 Joan married James W. Lewis. They had two children – Mark (who passed away tragically in 2015), and Kori.  She was employed with the Portage School Division from 1977 to 1988 as a school bus driver / trainer. During this time, she also owned and operated her own driving school - Classic Driving Academy from 1983 – 1988. In 1988, Joan commenced work at the Portage Correctional Centre as a Correctional Officer. She later held the position of Deputy Superintendent where she remained until her retirement is 2005.

Joan accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour on January 16th, 1962. She was a member of the Golden Plains Baptist Church in Portage la Prairie. One of her greatest loves was her grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she enjoyed spending time with. Family was always very important to her. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

As per her wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a Private Family Graveside Service.
