Malcolm Mackay Obituary

Malcolm (Mac) Mackay died at home on Monday August 15, 2022. Mac was born on October 15, 1943 in Napanee, Ontario. He was predeceased by his father (James Fee) in 1977 and his mother (Mary Elizabeth) in 2001. Mac grew up in Camden East and he headed west in 1964 and worked at Parkhill Bedding in Calgary and then joined the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. He was transferred to Medicine Hat where he met his wife to be. He married Laurel Binkley in Calgary on April 20, 1968, and then was transferred to Jasper.

While in Jasper he was a charter member of the Lions Club and he kept his membership up in Calgary and later in Burnaby. In 1971, he accepted a position with the bank of BC and moved to Burnaby and he became involved with Toastmasters at this time. They bought a house in Burnaby and in 1975 they both quit their jobs and after putting their house on the market, headed up north with a camper. Spent some time in Whitehorse visiting Laurel’s sister and family. Mac & Laurel went to the Montreal Olympics (summer) In 1976 and their son Colin was born shortly after they got back to Whitehorse. Mac worked as a cab driver in Whitehorse and then a dispatcher. In 1984 the family moved to Prince George and then to Kamloops in 1986 where Mac worked for Windsor Plywood. In 1988 the family moved to Calgary and got a job with Totem Building Supplies. In 1998 they put their house up for sale opened a 2nd hand bookstore in Didsbury, Ab. They moved the store to Red Deer, Ponoka then back to Didsbury until Laurel’s Dad died and the two of them went to Saskatchewan to stay with Laurel’s mother from March 2005 to May 2006 until her death. Mac did all the cooking at this time.

In September of 2007, the two of them bought a house in Portage la Prairie and they still drove to all surrounding thrift stores, bookstores; continuing looking for and buying books. Mac gave the bride away at Colin & Esther’s wedding in Edmonton September 19, 2008. Their son Colin and his two daughters Chloé (6) and Natalie (3) moved in with them in June 2016 for 2 1/2 years and when they moved into their own home Mac & Laurel continued sitting with the girls and Mac drove them back and forth to school or daycare while Colin went to work.

Mac enjoyed his retirement, which included spending time with his family, and keeping in touch with all the friends he had made over the years. He also enjoyed eating out, playing with the cats, watching boxing matches as well as reading books and watching movies.

As per Mac's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service at this time.
