Leonard Apperley Obituary

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Leonard Bryan Apperley at the age of 73 in Portage la Prairie, MB.

Humble, kind, patient, gentle. These are a few of the words that would immediately come to mind if asked to describe Leonard Apperley. His wife cherished 53 years with a caring man who proved to be an outstanding partner in all areas of life, and his children remember a fun, playful dad who would spend time with them and really listen while they talked. He will be dearly missed until we see him again.

Leonard was born on June 27, 1952, in Pilot Mound, MB and fell asleep on August 24, 2025, in Portage la Prairie, MB. He was the 4th child of Lorne and Doris Apperley and is survived by 8 of his beloved and devoted siblings with whom he enjoyed close relationships. On August 19, 1972, he married his sweetheart, Sandra Clancey, and together they built a happy family consisting of Brian, Justin, Tanya and Travis.

One area of Leonard’s life in particular took centre stage, and that is his faith in Jehovah and worship of Him. Leonard spent many hours examining his favourite Bible accounts and sharing what he uncovered with his loved ones and others. At the time of his death, his favourite Bible book was Daniel, and Leonard very much looked forward to the fulfillment of the exciting promises contained in that treasured book. In the congregations where he served, Leonard was known as a very patient and approachable man who was always willing to listen and help, and his love for Jehovah and his people was clearly evident to anyone who knew him.

While a devoted family man and skilled cabinet maker, Leonard’s curiosity and interest in creation led him to pursue many hobbies on the acreage near Souris. These included gardening, raspberry farming, and raising a variety of animals at various times including goats, horses, cattle, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and pigs. Later, he took an interest in beekeeping which he found fascinating and greatly enjoyed. He also continued to be a craftsman, building small but beautiful objects in the shop right up until the acreage sold in 2017. Later, and much to the surprise of his sons and daughter, he took an interest in cooking and created many delicious meals. He would spend a great deal of time sharing his recipes and cooking techniques with his siblings and others.

Leonard will be dearly missed by his treasured family: His wife, Sandra Apperley; his children and their spouses including Brian and Cheryl Apperley, Tanya and Rob Hales, Travis and Penny Apperley; his grandchildren including Brookelynn Apperley, Cody Apperley, Kiana Apperley, Bryson Apperley, Samuel  Apperley, Kaiya Apperley, Sadie Hales, Chase Apperley and Charlotte Apperley; his siblings and their spouses including Sherryl and Terry Gilbert, Allan Apperley, Jo Ann and Ernst Fliri, Rita Kerr, Jon Apperley, Arnie Apperley, Nathan Apperley and Sheila and Corey Propp, in addition to many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his parents, Lorne and Doris Apperley; by his son, Justin Apperley; his sister Lynne Rutherford, and by his grandson, Connor Hales.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 2 o’clock pm at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses - 3434 Park Avenue, Brandon, MB.
