Katherine "Kay" Letkeman

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of our Mom, Katherine “Kay” (nee Neustaeter) Letkeman on December 25th, 2022.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Ivan of 66 years. She was also predeceased by her parents, Aron and Anna Neustaeter, in laws Henry and Maria, 5 brothers and 3 sisters and a sister in infancy.

Forever remembered by her children, Stan (Janet), Bob (Wilma), Sandra (Randy), Kathy (Barry) and Debby (Ellis).

She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Jason, Pam, Trevor, Dustin, Derek, Branda- Leigh, Nolan, Angela, Raymond, Kelly and Tanya.

She had a special place in her heart for her 22 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She will be remembered by her 2 brothers, Jake (Helen) and Glen and sisters in laws, Doreen, Eileen, Mary Anne (Henry) and Alma, as well as nieces and nephews from far and wide!

Mom was born at home in a tiny village in southern Saskatchewan on May 29, 1931. Mom was known as ‘Nan’ to her family and to many others. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years. Mom and Dad fostered many children in their home.

Her garden was big enough to feed our family of seven and anyone else who needed fresh veggies. The freezer and pantry were always FULL! When I asked mom one day why she canned so much when there was food in the freezers her reply was, how would I feed the family if the hydro was off for a long period of time and the food was spoiled? That’s why there were shelves full of her canned goods! Mom loved to cook and bake! She always had fresh baking when we stopped in, no one left their place on an empty stomach!

Mom’s love for flowers was unbelievable! She had flowers everywhere, there wasn’t an empty spot in the garden, and she knew the name of every plant. Mom and Dad’s yard and garden were immaculate, never a weed or a leaf to be found on the ground.

Mom loved to sew, and it showed! Sewing matching dresses for us girls and the boys had matching shirts. Christmas time it was new PJ’s!

Mom was employed at Lion’s Prairie Manor in dietary for 15 years, many friendships were made with staff and residents. She never complained about working on Christmas Day, she said that the residents needed to eat!

Mom and Dad loved camping, watching the grandchildren sports, school activities, visiting with their neighborhood friends and church friends. Nan loved having her grandchildren and great grandchildren come for visits!

Faith was important to Mom, her and Dad attended church regularly up until Mom’s health would no longer allow.

In our grief we remember that Nan lived a life of purpose and joy and set an example for all of us to follow.

They simply mean we’ll miss you until we meet again.

The Celebration of Life for Katherine “Kay” Letkeman will take place on Wednesday, January 4th, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the Portage Evangelical Church, 72 3rd St. N.E., Portage la Prairie, MB. A private family interment will take place prior to the service at the Beaver Creek Cemetery, North Norfolk MB.
