Katharina Unger Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom Katharina Unger (nee Hiebert) at the Portage and District General Hospital on December 24th, 2020.

She was born in Swift Current Saskatchewan on September 26th, 1923 to Abram and Aganetha Hiebert. She was raised in a Christian home in the Carrot River area of Saskatchewan and was baptized in her teens. Mom continued to live there after her marriage to Jacob N. Gerbrand in October of 1941. While living in Saskatchewan they had 4 children – Elsie (1943), Aganessa (1944), Jake (1946), and Anne (1949). After moving to Austin MB, daughter Ella was born in 1953 and daughter Norma in 1958 after their move to their Lavenham farm in Manitoba. She worked hard to give her family all they needed. Along with her strong work ethic and love for family was her love for God and her devotion to her faith. Living the country life which she loved, she relied on and trusted her Lord and Savior.

After her first husband’s passing, she married Cornelius Unger a number of years later. She continued to live on the farm after her second husband’s passing. After a house fire on the farm, she and Ella together moved to Austin MB where she lived until her admittance to hospital.

She was predeceased by her first husband Jacob in 1987, her second husband Cornie in 1994, children Elsie (1947), Aganessa Brown (Gerbrand) (2009), great grandson Isaac Misanes (2013), infant brother Peter, followed by 2 sisters Mary and Susie, 2 brothers Abe and John later in life, 3 son-in-laws Jim Rogers, Ray Brown, and Jacob Wall. She is survived and lovingly remembered by Jake (Carol) Gerbrand, Anne Mikkelson (Kevin Napper), Ella Gerbrand, and Norma (Wayne) Wiebe. Also surviving are 2 sisters Margaret Van Meter, and Nellie Van Meter, both from Saskatchewan, along with many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and many close friends.

“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began”…  Titus 1:2
