Jean Catherine (Wieler) Finnie

July 19, 1945 ~ February 13, 2021 (age 75)

Following a long and courageous battle with cancer, it is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother on February 13, 2021, with family by her side.

Jean was born the 5th daughter and 5th child of Peter and Aganetha (Nettie Wiebe) Wieler at Winkler on July 19th, 1945.

Jean’s childhood years were spent on the family farm in the Elm Creek area. She finished her high school education at the Elm Creek Collegiate and in the fall of 1964, took a teaching position at Rob Roy School – a one room (grades 1-8) country school north of Portage la Prairie. It was here that Jean met her future husband, Craig Finnie.

On August 5th, 1966 they were married at Trinity United Church in Portage la Prairie. Jean continued to teach at Rob Roy until 1967, and then continued teaching at the Manitoba Developmental Centre until 1970. At that time, she gave up teaching to become a full-time homemaker, mother, and farm wife. Their daughter Roberta was born in 1970, son Jason in 1972, and daughter Tara in 1978, completing their family. Jean kept the house, cared for her family, and took care of the gardens and farm yard, taking great pride in keeping it all meticulous and looking immaculate! She was very down to earth and practical.

While living on the farm at Oakland, she was a member of the Murray United Church and taught Sunday School there until it closed. After that, she became a member of the Trinity United Church in Portage la Prairie. Jean was very involved in her church and community. She cared very much about her family as well as others. She was very proud of all her grandchildren, and enjoyed attending their many activities.

Jean was predeceased by her father Peter Wieler, mother Nettie Wieler, granddaughter Stella Brooke Finnie, her sister Dorothy and husband Isaac Neufeld, sister Lillian and husband Glen Treffry, brother-in-law Henry Abrahams, father-in-law Harold Finnie, his first wife Ann, and his second wife Hazel.

Jean is survived by her husband Craig Finnie, children Roberta (John Montgomery), Jason, and Tara (Darren Ruchkall), grandchildren Samantha, Kirk, Alex, Elisabeth, Ryan, and Chase, sisters Florence Harding and Betty Wieler, brother Jim (Lil) Wieler, and brother-in-law Doug (Jane) Finnie, and numerous nieces and nephews.

As per Jean’s request, flowers are graciously declined; instead, her wish was that you please give her family a kind thought, a phone call, and a hug when it is safe to do so. Donations in Jean’s memory can be made to Sunset Palliative Care or Central Plains Cancer Services.

The family wishes to extend a thank you to Drs. Dawe, Rathod, Kinnear and R. Price, as well as the nurses and staff at the Portage General Hospital, Aldene at Sunset Palliative Care, and a special thank you to Iris Yuill for her endless help and support.
