It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Janet Gabel at the Douglas Campbell Lodge on Friday, august 15, 2018.
Janet was born in Portage la Prairie on May 25, 1938, daughter of the late Harold and Gladys Griffin.
Predeceased by her parents, and her only brother Garth Griffin, she is survived by her sons Garth and Brent and grandchildren Randy and Joshua.
Janet received her education at the Gainsborough School, a two room school house, where she was taught in part by her father. She moved to Portage la Prairie to complete her education and resided at the Virden Block, which was the custom for many rural teenagers who came to Portage to complete their studies. After graduation she ha d a number of jobs at various Portage businesses, but by far her favourite job was at Gabel’s Jewelry. In fact she loved it so much she married the owner’s son and while being a big part of the success of the business, it was even more important to her that she was a good friend to all the people she worked with.
In her later years, Janet faced many challenges, including hereditary blindness. However, despite that she never lost the curiosity and zest for life that had come to define all aspects of who she was.
Friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Hillside Cemetery on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.
