The family regret to announce the passing of their beloved mother on August 5th, 2024. Mom was born in Winnipeg, but in her early years, she lived with her grandparents Henry and Catherine Zerkee on the family farm in the Oakville district. She spent most of her life living in Portage la Prairie. Mom was always a hard worker, being employed at various jobs such as Sears, Rewards Shoes, and was the custodian/canteen operator at the old Elite and Playhouse theatres in the 1960’s. But her greatest achievement was when she and Dad started a new venture as proprietors of the “Mike & Irene’s 5th Avenue Grocery”. This would be their life for the next 21 years. They took great pride in making the store a successful business where they got to meet and greet many people through the years. It took a lot of coaxing to get Mom to retire from the store. You could always see Mom and Dad holding hands on their daily walks around Island Park, no matter what the weather. She enjoyed being busy in her yard and would ensure every weed was pulled in the flowerbeds. She was the most caring loving mother and grandmother any child could ever ask for. Her children always came first. She would make birthdays and Christmas special for everyone.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Michael in December 2016, as well as her mother Gertie Palmer, baby sister Eleanor, brothers David, Douglas and Kenneth Palmer. She is survived by her daughter Lynda Yachyshen (Ed), sons David Stiegler (Nancy), and Michael Stiegler Jr.; grandchildren Ryan Yachyshen, Tiffany Yachyshen, Brian Stiegler, Aaron (Aimee) Stiegler, Anthony (Denise) Stiegler; great grandchildren Tanner Gunnarson, Connor Stiegler and Brenna Stiegler; her brothers William Palmer (Judy), Gordon Palmer and Arthur Palmer (Donna). She also leaves many extended family from the Palmer, Zerkee, Munro, and Sparrow sides.
There will be no formal service. Interment will be held on August 10th, 2024 at the Hillside Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.
