Herbert Weidman Obituary

Herbert Edward Weidman 1936 - 2024

Herb passed peacefully with family at his side, at age 88, on December 5th at Lions Prairie Manor in Portage la Prairie MB.

He was born July 25th 1936 in Winnipeg to Adam and Martha Weidman, and grew up on his parent’s farm south of Starbuck. In 1956, he married Shirley McDonald, and they subsequently had three children. Herb worked at various jobs in their early days, and again later in life, but he was, first and foremost, a farmer. Being self-employed suited him as he was a strong-willed individual who was determined to do things his own way...

Upon the birth of their first grandchild, Sheldon, Herb & Shirley became known as “Pop & Gram” and were subsequently known as such to all family members and to many others as well! Their grandchildren have happy memories of time spent with Pop & Gram at the farm in Dacotah!

Herb had a passion for building things, often choosing to build or modify rather than buy, structures and machines for use on the farm, and often recruited his brother Ray to lend his expertise and help on these “projects”. He was a history buff and, being an avid reader, acquired and read many books on the subject. He enjoyed revisiting the past in conversation with friends and acquaintances and readily acknowledged that he did not embrace change! He was also an enthusiastic collector of vintage farm equipment, with a particular fondness for John Deere tractors!

Herb is survived by: son Herb (Agnes), grandsons Sheldon Almroth (Maria), Jonathon Weidman, Roger Duval (Angela), Jean Claude Duval (Paula), granddaughter - Chantale Wessell (Chris), eight great grandchildren, sister Mae Denby (Jan Smeulders), son in law Dennis Almroth, and brother in law Dave Allinson.

Sadly, Herb was predeceased by: infant daughter Marjorie in 1963, daughter Gloria in 2018, and wife Shirley, also in 2018.

A celebration of life will be held for Herb at a later date.

We, the family, would like to express our gratitude to the staff of Lions Prairie Manor, for the kindness and compassionate care that Pop received during his near three year stay there. We would also like to extend a sincere “thank you” to friend and former neighbor Ian Kennell who went out of his way so many times to lend a helping hand to Pop...

Donations may be made to the Lions Prairie Manor Foundation Inc. 24 9 St SE, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3V4.
