Glenn Hayes Obituary

Glenn Currie Hayes passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on August 2nd, 2024 at the age of 71, with his wife Laurie and sons by his side. A man of great faith all through his life he felt peace from his Saviour right until the end.

Glenn was born at home in East Kildonan on July 21st, 1953. From an early age he committed his creative talent and inquisitive mind towards his faith, his art and his love of his family.

He is survived by Laurie, his loving wife of 44 years, his sons Christopher (Jessica) and Kevin (Samantha) and his much-loved granddaughters Avery and Mia who always brought him so much joy. He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Jane Hayes, older brother Mark, and father-in-law John Macpherson. He leaves behind 8 siblings; Janice Scherpenzeel (John), Geoff (Barbara), Mary Jane, Donna Minaker (Rick), Arlene Ritchie (Steve), Phillip (Barbara), Paul, Leslie Candy (Carey) and numerous nieces and nephews. Also mourning his loss are sister-in-law Carol Macpherson (Michael Johnson) and their BC family, (and) brother-in-law John Macpherson and many cousins and dear friends.

Graduating from RRC Advertising Art in 1974, Glenn began his career in advertising at The Awarehouse where he enjoyed the creative environment and made many fond memories. He moved first to Foster’s Advertising Agency and in 1989 to the Winnipeg Free Press where he became Art Director of the Advertising Art Department. It was here his first commission for a painting originated which then led to a prolific second career recreating nostalgic scenes of Winnipeg, under his then company Timepiece Publishing. He displayed his art locally at the Manitoba Art Expo, in galleries and several juried shows across Canada. He always considered it a great compliment to be referred to as the Norman Rockwell of the prairies. That these paintings told stories, warmed hearts and touched many lives was his greatest joy from this. When asked to create commissioned pieces for gospel outreach, he counted it both an honour and a joy.

Those close to him enjoyed his wit and keen sense of humour. He will be remembered as well for his love of history, music, and guitar playing. He was generous with his time in helping others when needed. He had an active interest in many areas, including his love of photography, travel, football, gardening and was the number one fan of his sons’ athletic endeavours- he was known to pack a football on the off-chance of finding someone to toss the ball with!  He enjoyed recent trips to PV and a long-awaited return to the UK last summer.

Glenn came to his Lord Jesus as his Saviour at a young age. As a young man he devoted many hours to study of the scriptures and developed a deep understanding that he loved to share with others. He was a capable Bible teacher, devoted Elder at Oxford Bible Church and shared countless hours on the phone with friends. He had a strong conviction to share this at any hour and opportunity - for any amount of time that someone was willing to spend.

He was ever a devoted father, adoring husband, doting grandfather, proud brother and friend who always found time to be present and loving. He will be greatly missed.

We would like extend our sincere thanks to the amazing team at Cancer Care Victoria (Dr. Beshara and nurse Karen in particular) for going above and beyond time and again. The final 6 weeks on Palliative Care at St. Boniface Hospital were a period of comfort and peace in a challenging time made all the better for the excellent team there.
