Flora "Doreen" Dow Obituary

Peacefully on March 19th, 2024 at the age of 98, Flora “Doreen” Dow passed away at West Park Manor in Winnipeg.

Doreen was born on July 23rd, 1925 to Charles and Kathleen Fraser of Oakland, Manitoba. She was raised on the family farm and attended school in Oakland, Manitoba.

On October 22nd, 1949 she married Douglas James Dow. From spring to fall they lived at and worked on the family farm near Macdonald. During the winter months they lived at Delta Beach while Doug commercial fished and later became a purchasing agent for the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation.

Mom loved curling, both as a participant and an observer. She and dad curled in many mixed bonspiels and leagues. She kept up with the professional curling teams, both men and women, on TV.

Mom enjoyed playing card games with friends and family. Upon the passing of these friends and family she would say, “I just picture them in heaven playing cards and enjoying themselves.”

The proper upkeep of her home and yard were a priority for mom. Her house was immaculate and the grass and flowerbeds were always carefully tended to.

Mom liked to mark occasions with a picture. She took many photos of Doug and friends upon their return from hunting with their ducks and geese. As this was before digital cameras, many a picture were returned from the developer with people’s heads cut off. Family took great pleasure in teasing her about this. Mom had a great sense of humor and laughed along with us. Her humor is something that many people have been commenting on while remembering her.

In retirement she and dad enjoyed 14 winters in Apache Junction, Arizona.

Mom had a special relationship with her sister Jean. She lost Jean to cancer in 1986 and it left a huge hole in her heart and life. She spoke of her often with admiration, love and sadness. It’s comforting to think that she and Jean are now reunited.

After dad’s passing, mom moved into Lakeshore Apartments in Portage la Prairie where she made new friends and became reacquainted with old friends. She was very fortunate for the friendship and support she received from her neighbors. Mom was moved into care at West Park Manor in Winnipeg during the height of Covid and despite the restrictions and isolation she took the change in stride.

Predeceased by her parents Charles and Kathleen Fraser; husband Douglas Dow; sister Jean Peterson, brother Don “Chester” Fraser.

Left to mourn her passing are her two children, daughter Donna and son Brad (Cori), two grandsons Bryan (Martina) and Jeff (Natalie), two great grandchildren Peyton and Sasha, sister-in -law Carol Fraser, cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire please consider a donation to Central Plains Cancer Care, 318 Saskatchewan Ave E, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8, or a charity of one’s choice.

As per Doreen’s wishes, a private funeral will be held at a later date.
