On December 11, 2017 at the Portage & District General Hospital, with her daughter by her side, Evelyn at the age of 94 years, peacefully joined her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
She was predeceased by her husband Clair Campbell (of 39 years) in 1990, parents Tom and Annie Towle of Austin, MB and two brothers; Percy and Russell. Left to mourn her passing are two sons, Michael of New Westminster, B.C. and Scott (Nicole) of Portage la Prairie, granddaughter Jennifer (partner Andrew, great-grandchildren Piper and Jace) and granddaughter Mikelle, one daughter Susan Campbell of Portage la Prairie, one sister Alice Green of Portage and five brothers, Cecil of B.C., Donald of Ontario, Les of Portage, Arnold (Marlene) of Portage and David (Millie) of B.C. as well as several nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was born near MacGregor, MB. and went to school in the McCauley and Emmeline schools. At age 18 she joined the WRENS (Women’s Royal Naval Service). After the war she moved to Portage and met Clair and they were married in 1951 and made their home in Portage. In Clair's business, Campbell's T V Service, Mom was the bookkeeper and ran the shop when he was out on house calls.
Mom enjoyed sewing (and made Susan's clothing when she was young), plus all the cushions and curtains for the many campers Clair made over the years. She enjoyed reading, bowling (5 and 10 pin), golfing, knitting, embroidery, needlework and cooking for her family. She specially enjoyed babysitting her granddaughters, and knit special sweaters for them. Mom volunteered with Meals on Wheels for approximately 25 years, MCC Thrift Shop, Portage Hospital Gift Shop, Cancer Care (selling daffodils), Portage Library and United Way. Upon Clair's retirement in 1980 they fulfilled their love of travelling by driving to Texas for 10 winters, taking a different route each year. After Dad's death, she drove to Texas by herself for several more years.
In 1990 she accepted Christ, attended bible studies, was baptized and became a member of Highway Pentecostal Church.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in Highway Pentecostal Church with a reception to follow.
If friends so desire, memorial donations to the Portage & District Hospital Foundation, 524 Fifth Street S. E., Portage la Prairie, MB would be appreciated.
