Donald "Keith" Young Obituary

Burial Update: the burial for Keith Young will take place on Friday, May 24th, 2024, at 1:00 pm, at the St. Bede's Anglican Cemetery, Kinosota, MB. All are welcome to attend.

Peacefully, on Friday, February 9th, 2024, Donald “Keith” Young passed away at his residence at the Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie, MB.

Keith liked to go to Tim's for his morning coffee, that’s what he called it. Keith liked to go cut the grass and shovel snow, and sometimes people got Keith to help them out, and he would say, “I’d be glad to help you, and clean out your driveway when it needs to be done.” Keith liked to go on walks and ride his bike.

Keith grew up on the farm in Silver Ridge, Manitoba and did a lot of work like cutting wood by hand to get the wood in the house before the winter, go out to the hen house to get all the eggs for mother so she could cook breakfast for all the kids. Keith liked to go pick raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, rhubarb, choke cherries and saskatoons, then mom would make gooseberry pie, rhubarb and strawberry pie, raisin pie, pumpkin and blackberry pies too. Keith had learned to cook by watching mother from the age of five years. At a very young age, Keith had made his first home made stew for Brian and then he phoned Bella to come down for his stew.

If ever anyone needed help all they had to do was call Keith or go down to his place and tell him what they wanted done. Keith would always ask if anyone needed a helping hand, he liked to tell jokes and make people laugh. Keith got along with people and liked to make friends. He liked giving out Halloween candy to all the kids on Halloween night.

Keith is the youngest boy in the family and was named after his grandfather, a namesake passed down to him that Keith held dear. Keith was predeceased by his mother Jean Young, brothers Albert and William, and sisters Deanna and Irene.  He is survived by his brothers Dennis Young of Alonsa, Brian Young at the Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage La Prairie, his sister Bella of Portage La Prairie, multiple cousins and his three nephews.

Keith liked the songs, When the Roll is Called Up Yonder and I’ll Fly Away. He liked music, movies and animals such as birds, cats and rabbits, and helping out in the garden. Keith will not be forgotten by his brothers and sister. Keith always had time to help his sister Bella with her cats, and made sure there was food in her fridge and he always appreciated when she had goodies for him. He took care of his friend Dave in many of the same ways. His sister Bella in turn also walked to his house to look after him and make sure he had what he needed, and that he had enough food to eat. She will miss him very much.

Keith drove the tractor and hauled wood and hay and straw and, in the winter, he would drive that tractor with no hat on his head and froze his ears! Keith liked to share things and to give gifts to those who were his friends. He would buy us coffees from Tim’s… it was like Tim’s was his second home! He would ride his bike across town to help his cousin Kevin Young with grass cutting. He was a hard worker just like the olden days and was a true helper to those around him.

“… if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved”. Romans 10:9
