On Monday, April 15, Cornelius Loewen, known to many here as Niles, and family affectionately called him Corny…was called home to be with his Lord & Saviour, the One he served with all his heart, desiring that all those around him would come to know and love Christ just as he did. When he was around 17 years old he chose to believe & accept what Jesus did on the cross of Calvary for each person in this world, knowing 100% sure that he would be in heaven when he died…and he would've desired that for you.

Cornelius Loewen was born in Belize, Central America, on June 8, 1969, to Alvin & Greta Loewen, as their firstborn son. For the first 6 weeks of his life his parents thought he was a healthy child. At this point, he developed several medical complications, which then eventually led to the realization in his late teens that his kidneys were failing. Upon arriving in Manitoba, Canada, as a returning citizen in 1990, he found medical help through dialysis to sustain his life, and shortly thereafter received a kidney transplant.

From then till 1993, he settled into Winnipeg, finished high school, and met his future wife. June 19, 1993 marked the start of 30 years of a marriage grounded in love. Then over the next 10 years he fathered 5 “awesome” children…as he would say.

In the year 2000, he and his family moved to Portage la Prairie, where he began working for Hi-Tec Industries and started to faithfully attend Golden Plains Baptist Church. Around 2008, having learned Spanish while living in Costa Rica, the Lord guided him to start giving the gospel to the Mexicans that came seasonally to our town; he did that for a couple years. In 2010, God called him to be a missionary to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Planning, preparation and travel for this went on till December 2013, when he moved his family to the mission field. The Lord allowed the family to minister in Tekax for 2 ½ years until his transplanted kidney began to fail. July 2016, he, with his family returned to Canada in hopes that not too long in the future he would be able to get another kidney transplant and go back to Mexico. This didn’t happen, and though the hospital stays and health difficulties were at times extremely challenging, he was determined to stay strong.

This year his health improved significantly, and the special highlight was in March when he and his family went to visit the church in Mexico for their 10th Anniversary. It is also special to note that he spent a lot of quality time with each of his children, close family and dear friends prior to his home going.

He is survived by his wife Pam, and children Kyla, Leanna & Ben, Calen & Teshia, Justin, and Saphina(Tim), 4 grandsons Andrew, Connor, Oliver and Peter. His parents Alvin & Greta Loewen, siblings Albert & Anita, Lena & John, Ann & Phillip, Ben & Laura, Dennis & Heidi, His Mother-in-law Rosa Brandt, in-laws Loralie & Mike Hilles and Ivan & Doris Brandt plus numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Banman, Father-in-law Ben Brandt and brother Klaas Loewen.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 27th, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Golden Plains Baptist Church, 1201 Tupper St. N, Portage la Prairie, MB with viewing 1 hour prior to the service. The burial will take place at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Portage la Prairie following the service. A reception will be held in the church following the burial.
