Catherina "Kay" Mary (Mikelson) Garrioch

We announce with sadness the peaceful passing of our Mother on Friday, September 4, 2020 at Portage General Hospital at the age of 91.

Mom was the eldest of four children. She was born January 24, 1929 at Gilbert Plains, Manitoba to Charles and Mary Ellen Mikelson.

Like most prairie girls born during this time, Mom helped her parents on the farm and she often talked about the hours she spent working with her Dad and sister Dorothy; babysitting her younger sister Ann, milking cows, haying in the hot prairie sun, and being home schooled by her Mother for the first number of years. 

Mom married Dad (Gavin) on June 17th, 1953 and together raised their family of three children; Beverly, Dee and Sheldon.

The hard years of the Great Depression taught Mom to turn a nickel into a dime and as a result she was a creative and thrifty homemaker. She spent many hours sewing and creating lovely clothing for her girls with or without a pattern. She was active in home and school organizations, UCW, five pin bowling and MacKenzie Church for over 60 years. 

She is survived by her children Beverly, Dee and Sheldon and their respective spouses; also, a grandson Errick (Kristi) son-in-law Gord, and her sister Dorothy Little. 

She was predeceased by her husband Gavin in 2017; grandson Scott in 1983, sister Hilma (Anne) Johnson and brother George. 

Our deepest thanks to the staff of Skyview at Lion's Prairie Manor for their care of Mom during this very challenging time and the staff on Medical at Portage General Hospital for their exceptional and kind care of Mom. 

We give our heartfelt thanks to Jeanette Burke who became Mom's special friend and confidante at Lion's Prairie Manor. We are forever grateful to you for your many kindnesses and care shown towards Mom. 

Rest easy Mom. You are reunited with Dad and your loved ones and we will meet again. 

Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions at this time, a private family interment will take place and a Memorial Gathering will take place at a later date. Details will be announced at that time.
