On Monday, December 1st, 2025 Bernard McCartney passed away peacefully at the Portage District General Hospital with family by his side.
Bernie was generous with his time and never refused to help someone. Whether his help was needed at work or for a friend he was always willing to lend a hand. He was often too liberal with his help that Mom could be overheard in the kitchen telling him “Leave it alone" or "not yet". Later on in life he was more the garage manager where the boys learned a lot of skills which they are very thankful to have the opportunity to continue to spread his knowledge.
Walking in the house he always made sure he offered you something. For some it was a drink, others it was food and if you were a 4-leggedfriend he also made sure they had a treat (or 10). If you declined, he added "if you change your mind, don't be shy and just help yourself".
Bernie worked at McCain Foods for 41 years mainly as a forklift mechanic but also worked as a refrigeration tech where he made a lot of friendships that continued on even after his retirement in 2017.
As an early riser, he made sure he was always on time. Whether going to work, hunting, fishing or cruising the avenue in his convertible listening to Johnny Cash if the start time was set, those who knew, knew that it actually meant he would be ready and waiting 30 minutes before that.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Melvin and sister, Mary along with several in-laws and his cat, Lucky. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy, cherished sons Cliff (Erin), Jeff (Angie) and Trevor (Jess), beloved grandson, Dante, precious granddaughters, Claudia and Miyah, his buddy, Clay, and grandbaby-to-be arriving in Spring 2026, brother, Dean (Trudi), brother-in-law, Isaac Wiebe, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by life-long friends Rick and Gailyn Whincup, coffee buddy, Kenny Knox, and too many other friends to name who meant the world to him.
He could be heard saying "No disrespect but if it was me doing it" or "I've got one thing to tell you".
Well Dad, we thank you for your time with us and leave you with one thing to tell you.... you’ll be missed beyond words.
