Verna Claire (Lusk) Wilson

  Peacefully, after a courageous battle with C.O.P.D., it is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear Mom, Granny, and sis, Verna, on her late son’s birthday, January 4, 2020 at the age of 82, with her daughter Wendy and brother Raymond by her side at the Lion’s Prairie Manor.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Wendy(Larry), grandchildren, Justin (Kalynne), Meagan (Drew), her precious great grandchildren Ava and Silas, brother Raymond Lusk (Marilyn), sister Sandy Van Meer, sister-in-law Marge Van Meer, brother-in-law Lionel Philippot, as well as her special nieces, nephews and friends. She also will be sadly missed by the family’s furry friends!
Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband Ken in 2014 and her precious son Bob in 1977, parents Clarence and Gladys Lusk, sister Elva Philippot , brother Garry Van Meer and parents-in-law Ken and Merle WIlson.
Mom was born December 19, 1937 in Portage. She grew up in the Overhill District where she also received her Education. As a young girl she did many a chores on the farm and later in her teen years had odd jobs in Portage. On June 25, 1955 she married the love of her life Ken Wilson where they made their home in Winnipeg. This is where their two children Bob and Wendy were born and raised until moving to St. Anne, MB where Mom became a farm girl again! She definitely was a natural at the farm life but after a few years, in 1971 her and Dad decided to move back home closer to their roots, they were Portage bond! For the most part she was a stay-at-home Mom, working part-time at Loblaws Canteen for a bit but mainly various babysitting jobs as Bob and I were growing up.
In the mid 70’s Mom was a home care worker where her clients adored her. Some would specifically asked for Verna and no wonder why, with her kindness, compassion and hard work, she was well respected. Then came the early eighties when she decided to take on a new position as Canteen manager at AMHS until her retirement in 1998. Her love for this job was shown through her delicious cooking and baking that she would prepare for students and staff, making sure all holidays were celebrated. In her years of work and retirement she especially loved the many events shared with family and friends.
Mom’s grandchildren were her prized possessions, and when the great grandchildren came into her life, her eyes lit up every moment she was around them. Then her family pets which she so adored, always making sure they had to be fed with treats in hand! Mom was a natural animal lover by heart. She will now be back with her beloved Diddles and Cole in her glory giving them treats!
She had a passion for her yard and gardening, canning and freezing many veggies that she had grown such as mustard bean, dill and beet pickles, and her well loved chili sauce just to mention a few. She could make a meal from nothing and was the best gravy maker and her homemade buns were well known throughout the family, not to mention all of her delicious desserts! Everyone on 432-2nd knew her as a very kind and caring neighbour, not only to them but their pets as well, again making sure treats were available as they walked by. Her door was always open to many family and friends with a pot of coffee and snack to be had for sure. Mom loved her years of curling with the Burnside club. So many fun times were had at their special events. She was an avid CFRY, Sunday morning request show and Saturday night polka party listener. She loved watching her curling and especially her Winnipeg Jets on TV, which she had on many times at the Manor. Mom and Dad had many years of enjoyment with their camper, at various campgrounds throughout and many chuckwagon races with so many close friends and family. Lots of laughter and music were had around that camper, there would be Mom making sure everyone had to be fed as well. And all the many Old Tyme dances she danced  with Dad’s band that played in Portage and surrounding area.
As every time we’d say goodbye Mom, l love you, love you too!
A celebration of Mom’s life will be held at the Herman Prior Centre, Portage la Prairie, MB on Monday January 27, 2020 at 2:00 pm.
