Thomas Simpson Obituary

With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Thomas ‘Monty’ Simpson on January 5th, 2019 at the Portage District General Hospital at 89 yrs of age with family by his side. Monty was born August 28th, 1929 and raised in the Portage Creek District area raised on the farm with his three siblings. Monty attended the Portage Creek School till grade 9 and then High Bluff School for grades 10 and 11. Monty stayed on to continue farming with his father on the family farm. He also enjoyed trapping in the springtime.

Dad met his wife, Joyce Eleanor Nowell, at one of the local dances and they were married November 14th, 1951. They moved into the farmhouse with his father, William H Simpson raising their 4 children. While farming he would help brother-in-law, Reg Gibbs with his carpentry business when possible. He worked at Bradley’s seed cleaning plant for several years and also spent three winters building sheds for farmers in a government project. Mom and Dad moved to town in 1985 where they built a house on Dufferin Ave till present.

Dad was very active with curling in Oakland and Portage curling clubs, he was on the executive for the Oakland Curling Rink for several years. Monty served on the Portage Creek School Board till the school was disbanded and consolidated with High Bluff. Dad was active with the liniment league playing baseball for several years with the Minards and serving on that executive as well.

In later years dad very much enjoyed watching his sports, curling, especially his favorite teams, Toronto Blue Jays, Winnipeg Jets and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with family.

He leaves to mourn his daughter Jackie (Garry) Cleaver, grandchildren; Wayne (Cheryl), Brian, and Stacy; son Murray (Jackie), grandchildren Brett (Julie), Bradley (Robyn), and Will; daughter Michelle (Carleton) Jack, grandchildren Devon and Janine and grandchild Brandon Irwin.  Brother William (Bill) Simpson and sister Nora Hughes and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
