It is with sadness, but also relief, after a courageous battle with cancer, done only her way, on January 10, 2020 at Portage General Hospital, with husband Ed and good friend Bev Gray by her side, Sigrid Louise Larkin (Milbradt) peacefully passed away.
She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, her daughter Kary Odiatu, with grandchildren Kylie, Sage, Jolie and Theo, daughter Laurie (Bill) Ansell, with grandchildren Mitch and Jessie, brother Rick Milbradt (Sandy), brother-in-law Dale Larkin (Dawn), as well as uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Sigrid was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Stella Milbradt, stepmother Mary, brother Jim, sister-in-law Sharon Milbradt, grandson Jordan Odiatu and parents-in-law Dan and Alma Larkin.
Born November 6, 1951 in Drumheller, Alberta, her family moved to Brandon and then on to Portage la Prairie, where she finished her schooling and then took a hairdressing course in Brandon. She definitely chose the right profession, as she would continue to style hair for her beloved “ladies” for 46 years. Besides her family, her hairdressing salon in the garage was her love and haven. She also enjoyed following her girls in all their endeavours as they grew up and went on their way in life. She enjoyed golfing and being a member, as well as organizing events, at the Portage Golf Club for a number of years. She enjoyed her yard and especially her flower beds.
But especially she enjoyed trolling slowly down the Whitemud River fishing for walleye, and was she ever good at catching them, and it wasn’t luck, it was all skill, according to her.
A special thank you to the Home Care girls for their excellent care of Sigrid over the last two years and the Palliative Care nurses and staff at the Portage General Hospital for their care and compassion during her short stay. To her many friends, you know who you are, for all your visits to our home, thank you, she so enjoyed and appreciated you taking the time to come.
Sigrid wrote a note to Kary, who was in her teens at the time, which read:
“Remember me with smiles and laughter, not with tears and sadness.”
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral.
Flowers are gratefully declined. A donation, if one so wishes, may be made in Sigrid’s name to a charity of one’s choice.
