Gerald Dale Garrioch

Peacefully on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the Portage General Hospital, Jerry Garrioch, beloved husband of Edie Garrioch passed away at  the age of 77 years, with family at his side.                                                                                                                                                                                   

Jerry was born and raised in Portage la Prairie, son of the late Bob and Pearl Garrioch.

Jerry joined the army at a young age, where he gained knowledge of a broader world, and after he was discharged, returned to his home town.  There he met and married Edith Wright, in 1963.  They moved to Thompson, MB where Jerry was employed by Inco.  There they made many lifelong friends and started their family, sons Rob and Sean.

The family moved to Lloydminster, AB in 1974 where Jerry worked in the oil industry for ten years,  In 1984, they returned to Portage, where Jerry worked for Cojef Ltd., and then drove a cement truck for a time.  He started working for the City of Portage la Prairie, and remained employed there until his retirement.

Jerry was known for his sense of humor, and was a great favorite of his nieces and nephews, who thought of him as the “fun” uncle.  He was also known for his work ethic, as he continued to remain busy and work on projects, until ill health slowed him down.  He could always be counted on to help a friend, or do a favor, anytime of day or night.

In his leisure time, Jerry loved sports.  Hockey and baseball were his favorites, followed by golf and curling in his later years.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Predeceased by his parents Robert and Pearl (Davis) Garrioch, brothers Jack, Gavin and sisters Barbara Garton, Judy Finnegan and Laura Fox.  He is survived by his wife Edie, son Rob, grand daughters Danielle and Sarah, son Sean (Dawn), grandsons Ryan and Brett (Brooklyn), brother Cal (Joanne), sisters Joan Ward and Cathy White, in-laws Helen Flamand (Walter), Bernie Wright, Allene Roy (Dennis), Jim Wright, Shirley Rapmund, Kay Garrioch,  numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

As per Jerry’s request, there will be no funeral.  There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
